It’s Here!

“Gratitude turns
what we have
into enough.”

Aesop

There is something special about the month of November. It arrives quietly, without the excitement of summer or the anticipation of Christmas. The days grow shorter, the air becomes cooler, and the trees begin surrendering their leaves. Nature seems to be reminding us that there is a time for everything, including slowing down.

November is a month of transition. October’s colorful celebrations are behind us, and December’s holiday frenzy has yet to begin. For a few precious weeks, we are offered an opportunity to pause, reflect, and appreciate the simple blessings of everyday life. Perhaps that’s November’s greatest gift.

In a world that constantly encourages us to do more, accomplish more, and acquire more, November invites us to recognize that what we already have may be more than enough. A warm home. A familiar voice on the telephone. Lunch with a friend. The laughter of grandchildren. A beautiful sunset. A handwritten note. These ordinary experiences are, in reality, extraordinary gifts.

Of course, November is also the month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving. While I appreciate the traditions of gathering with family and friends, sharing a meal, and enjoying a little football, I believe Thanksgiving offers something far more meaningful than a single day of celebration. It challenges us to develop an attitude of gratitude that extends beyond the fourth Thursday of November, and to begin to consciously see the people and the world around us through the lens of gratitude.

Gratitude doesn’t require a perfect life. We can acknowledge our disappointments, struggles, and uncertainties while still recognizing the goodness that surrounds us. In fact, some of life’s most difficult experiences teach us to appreciate blessings we previously took for granted. As I grow older, I find myself increasingly aware of how quickly the calendar pages turn. Another November. Another Thanksgiving. Another opportunity to recognize the people whose presence makes my life meaningful. And another opportunity to tell them so.

November reminds us that nothing lasts forever. Seasons change. Children grow. Friendships evolve. Life moves forward, whether we’re ready or not. But rather than allowing that reality to discourage us, we can embrace it as an invitation to live more intentionally.

This November, may we worry less about what is missing from our lives and appreciate more deeply what remains. After all, the greatest gift of November may simply be the reminder that today is a gift.
